Chat Tu Mi & Colour - The Jamaican-themed workbook by Amashika Lorne

First published in October 2019 and copyrighted in Kingston, Jamaica, this 44-page children’s book is a vibrant celebration of Jamaican language, memory, and cultural storytelling. It brings together 20 carefully crafted line drawings paired with Jamaican proverbs, riddles, and traditional ring games—offering a playful yet meaningful way for young readers to connect with heritage through both words and art.

While the book is suitable for all ages, it is especially well-suited for children between 6–8 years old. At this stage, the combination of visual storytelling and short, memorable cultural sayings helps build curiosity, comprehension, and early appreciation for folklore. The inclusion of line drawings also makes it highly interactive—children are encouraged to engage directly with the pages using pencil crayons, bringing each illustration to life in their own unique way.

Beyond reading, the book is designed as a shared experience between children and parents or caregivers. Adults are encouraged to use the proverbs as conversation starters—sharing personal memories, explaining meanings, and reflecting on how these sayings were used in their own upbringing. This intergenerational exchange is one of the most powerful aspects of the book, helping to preserve oral traditions in a way that feels natural and engaging.

The official launch was a deeply personal and meaningful occasion, attended by family and friends. The support and presence of loved ones made the event especially memorable and underscored the book’s roots in community and cultural pride. It first became available in Jamaica on November 11, 2019, retailing at $1,500 JMD or approximately $13 USD.

At its core, this book is more than a collection of illustrations and sayings—it is a cultural bridge. It invites children in Jamaica and the diaspora to see themselves reflected in stories, while also encouraging families to keep traditions alive through storytelling, laughter, and shared reflection.
